In the skies above the Middle East on September 30, 2026, a routine flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a nightmare. What followed was an extraordinary act of courage by Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, who, despite being seriously injured, helped save every one of the 174 people on board. Days later, speaking emotionally from his hospital bed, the 39-year-old captain shared how the will to protect others and a simple prayer kept him going.

Who Is Smit Machchhar?

Smit Machchhar is a Mumbai-raised Indian pilot of Gujarat origin. He now lives in Dubai with his wife Sonal and their two children.

Aviation was never part of his original plan. After school, he studied textile engineering, intending to join the family business, and later pursued management studies at Mumbai’s Welingkar Institute of Management.

He trained as a commercial pilot in New Zealand, joined SpiceJet in 2011, and rose to senior commander and line training captain over more than a decade. In June 2022, he moved to flydubai as a direct-entry captain on the Boeing 737 fleet. With nearly 9,750 flying hours, he is known among friends and colleagues as calm, composed, cheerful, and deeply family-oriented, a “carefree Mumbai boy” who always has a plan.

The Mid-Air Ordeal

According to reports, aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, Machchhar’s Omani co-pilot stabbed him in the cockpit and attempted to crash the aircraft. The plane plunged thousands of feet in seconds while carrying 174 passengers and crew, including children. Covered in blood and collapsed on the floor, Machchhar still managed to unlock and open the cockpit door. This allowed passengers and crew to intervene and overpower the attacker. Off-duty pilots travelling as passengers then took control and made a safe emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar underwent surgery in Tabuk before being airlifted to Abu Dhabi for further treatment. Officials reported him stable and recovering well. World leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli President Isaac Herzog, and US President Donald Trump, praised him as a hero whose actions helped prevent a potential catastrophic disaster. Gujarat announced a state honour and reward, while leaders from Maharashtra and across India expressed pride.

Speaking from His Hospital Bed

On October 2, 2026, Captain Machchhar spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video call from his hospital bed in the UAE. In an emotional conversation, he broke down as he recounted the moments that tested everything he had learned in 17 years of flying, including 11 as a captain.“I was fighting for my life,” he told the Prime Minister.

“I had so many wounds, I had fallen down. When I was down, I could feel that the aircraft was plummeting… even with my eyes closed. I realised that if I won’t show courage, then 170 passengers will lose their lives.”He described making one final effort: “I knew this was the last push… the door was right there. Even as blows were still landing on me, I just managed to open it. Then everyone else arrived. Everyone else played an equal role.”

Throughout the ordeal, Machchhar said he drew strength from the Hanuman Chalisa. “Whenever I feel pain, I just chant Hanuman Chalisa. At that time, too, I was only chanting Hanuman Chalisa. And I know that God saved me.” He added that he regularly recites it to his young son, keeping cultural roots alive even while living abroad. Machchhar expressed deep gratitude and pride at speaking with Modi, whom he called his “biggest idol.”

He assured the Prime Minister of his confidence in a full recovery, saying it would be a gradual journey but one he was determined to complete. He repeatedly stressed that the safe outcome was a collective effort.Prime Minister Modi praised his courage, presence of mind, and composure, telling him that the entire country was praying for his recovery and that Indians are people who risk their own lives to save others. Modi had earlier spoken with Machchhar’s parents, Bhupendrabhai and Geetaben, and his wife Sonalben.

Quiet Hero

Friends and a doctor close to Machchhar have pointed to his training, calm temperament, and “muscle memory” as factors that helped him act under extreme stress. Neighbours in Mumbai’s Tilak Nagar have expressed pride mixed with prayers for his recovery.

Captain Smit Machchhar’s story is one of quiet professionalism meeting extraordinary circumstances. From a textile student who never planned to fly to the pilot who opened a cockpit door while fighting for his life, he has shown that presence of mind and a sense of duty can turn potential tragedy into survival. As he continues to recover in the hospital, the next questions come to mind who was the other pilot and what was his motive behind this shocking terror attack. But for now as he recovers in the hospital more than a hundred families pray for the health and well being of their courageous saviour hero Smit Machchhar.
