Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Visits Pakistan After 11 Years as Nations Mark 60 Years of Diplomatic Ties
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday for a three-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations as the two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic ties. The visit, scheduled from October 20 to 22, is the first by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in 11 years.
Muizzu is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the visit is expected to expand cooperation across several sectors, including trade, investment, defence, maritime security, healthcare, education and tourism.
The Maldivian president is scheduled to meet Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, who will host a state banquet in his honour. He will also hold restricted and delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Sharif to review bilateral relations and explore opportunities for deeper cooperation.
Trade, Defence and Maritime Security on the Agenda
The discussions are expected to cover the full spectrum of Pakistan-Maldives relations, with both sides exploring ways to strengthen economic and strategic engagement.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the two leaders will discuss cooperation in trade, investment, health, education, tourism, agriculture, defence, maritime security, climate change and people-to-people exchanges.
The leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international developments of mutual interest.
A number of agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) covering different areas of bilateral cooperation are expected to be signed during the visit, the Foreign Office said.
The proposed agreements could provide a framework for expanding institutional cooperation and creating new opportunities for engagement between the two countries.
Pakistan-Maldives Business Forum to Explore Investment Opportunities
A key component of Muizzu’s visit is the Pakistan-Maldives Business Forum, which aims to bring together business communities from both countries.
The forum is expected to facilitate discussions on trade, investment and potential commercial partnerships. Both countries are looking to identify new avenues for economic cooperation and strengthen links between their private sectors.
For the Maldives, closer engagement with Pakistan could create additional opportunities in areas such as tourism, healthcare, education and trade. Pakistan, meanwhile, could explore greater economic engagement with the Indian Ocean island nation through commercial partnerships and sector-specific cooperation.
The outcomes of the business forum and the expected bilateral agreements will help determine the practical scope of the proposed economic engagement.
Pakistan and Maldives Mark 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations
Pakistan and the Maldives established diplomatic relations in 1966. Muizzu’s visit comes as the two countries commemorate six decades of formal diplomatic engagement.
The visit also follows a gap of 11 years since a Maldivian president last travelled to Pakistan, making it a significant diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Male.
Muizzu is accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers and senior officials. Earlier, a Maldivian delegation led by Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam arrived in Islamabad ahead of the presidential engagements.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the visit reflects the two countries’ commitment to strengthening their partnership and opening new avenues for mutually beneficial cooperation.
The meetings over the three-day visit are expected to set the direction for future engagement, particularly in economic cooperation, defence, maritime security and regional affairs, as Pakistan and the Maldives seek to build on their 60-year diplomatic relationship.
