Flávio Bolsonaro Flees to US After Election Defeat, Claims to Be Brazil’s ‘Rightful Leader’

Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro has arrived in Florida after travelling through Argentina and Ecuador following his defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil’s October 25 presidential runoff. Bolsonaro has refused to accept the election result, accused Brazil’s judicial authorities of electoral fraud without presenting evidence, and declared himself the country’s rightful leader. His departure has intensified political tensions in Brazil amid ongoing financial investigations and a confrontation between the Bolsonaro family and the country’s judiciary.

The 45-year-old politician arrived at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport on Wednesday, October 28, with his wife and two daughters aboard a private jet. His journey reportedly involved a discreet departure from Brasília, a land crossing into Argentina and a refuelling stop in Ecuador before the aircraft continued to Florida.

Bolsonaro Challenges Lula’s Victory From the US

Shortly after arriving in the United States, Bolsonaro published an open letter on X challenging the legitimacy of Lula’s victory. He initially described himself as the “elected president” before revising the statement to identify himself as Brazil’s “leader”.

Bolsonaro accused Lula and Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court of manipulating the electoral process and alleged that the country had fallen under authoritarian control. However, he has not provided evidence to substantiate his allegations.

Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court reported that Lula secured 51.79% of valid votes, receiving 64,256,232 votes against Bolsonaro’s 59,826,041. Lula’s winning margin stood at 4,430,191 votes.

Bolsonaro’s own Liberal Party (PL) has acknowledged Lula’s victory, while international election observers have recognised the electoral authorities’ handling of the runoff.

The defeated candidate has also indicated that he intends to coordinate opposition activities from the United States, signalling that his electoral defeat will not mark the end of his political campaign.

Why Bolsonaro’s Journey to Florida Is Under Scrutiny

Bolsonaro’s departure has attracted attention because of the circumstances surrounding his exit and the legal investigations he faces in Brazil.

According to media reports, a convoy of four dark-coloured vehicles left his residence in Brasília after the election, with the vehicles travelling in different directions. The arrangement reportedly made it difficult for journalists and observers to determine his whereabouts.

Bolsonaro and his family subsequently crossed into Argentina, where migration authorities confirmed their entry with valid travel documents. Reports indicated that the senator used an Italian passport, while his wife and daughters travelled on Brazilian documents.

The family then boarded a Gulfstream IV private jet operated by Argentina-based Baires Fly SA. The aircraft reportedly flew from Puerto Iguazú to Guayaquil, Ecuador, for refuelling before continuing to Miami.

The journey has raised questions about compliance with a Supreme Federal Court order requiring Bolsonaro to surrender his passports in connection with ongoing investigations. However, reports indicated that Brazilian authorities had not classified him as a fugitive as of Wednesday.

Bolsonaro faces allegations involving money laundering and other suspected financial misconduct, including investigations into funds allegedly linked to online gambling and financing for a film about his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. The senator has denied wrongdoing, and the investigations have not established his guilt.

Trump Administration’s Role Adds an International Dimension

Bolsonaro’s arrival in Florida has also brought the political relationship between the Bolsonaro family and US President Donald Trump back into focus.

Trump has maintained ties with the family and previously criticised Lula’s political position and the legal proceedings involving former president Jair Bolsonaro. Before the Brazilian election, Trump appeared alongside Flávio Bolsonaro but stopped short of formally endorsing his presidential campaign.

Following the election, Trump described the Brazilian vote as suspicious and suggested that the process appeared corrupt. He subsequently confirmed that Bolsonaro had been permitted to enter the United States, while saying he would not become involved in Brazil’s post-election dispute.

Bolsonaro thanked Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei for their assistance. His political connections in Washington and Buenos Aires have therefore become an important part of the unfolding controversy.

Florida also has a precedent for the family. Jair Bolsonaro travelled to the state after losing the 2022 presidential election to Lula, making his son’s arrival there a politically significant parallel.

Lula has criticised Flávio Bolsonaro’s departure, describing it as “shameful” and questioning why a defeated candidate would leave the country under such circumstances.

Dispute Over Voting Hours Fails to Explain Bolsonaro’s Defeat

One of Bolsonaro’s principal objections concerns a decision to extend voting hours at polling stations facing access difficulties.

Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court authorised voting to continue until 7 pm at polling stations that had not already closed, following complaints about difficulties reaching polling locations. The decision reportedly followed requests from both presidential campaigns.

Bolsonaro argued that the extension created unequal treatment and compromised the election. However, available electoral data show that only 34,393 votes were recorded after the original 5 pm closing time, far fewer than Lula’s winning margin of more than 4.4 million votes.

Even if all votes cast during the extended period were excluded, the result would remain unchanged.

The Carter Center, which observed the election, commended Brazil’s electoral authorities for administering the runoff and reporting the outcome.

What Happens Next?

Bolsonaro’s decision to challenge the election from the United States presents a new test for Brazil’s political institutions and its relations with Washington.

Brazilian authorities could face further questions over his failure to surrender his passports, while his decision to organise opposition activities from abroad may deepen political divisions at home.

His statements also revive a broader confrontation between the Bolsonaro family and Brazil’s judiciary. Former president Jair Bolsonaro was convicted over an unsuccessful attempt to overturn his 2022 election defeat, while his son faces separate financial investigations.

For now, Lula’s victory remains the official electoral outcome. Flávio Bolsonaro’s declaration of himself as Brazil’s rightful leader carries no recognised constitutional authority and does not change the result certified by the country’s electoral institutions.
